Electric People-Movers

Trams and other types of people-movers can be equipped with new battery technologies to enable passengers to be shuttled short distances in quiet comfort. Riders will also appreciate the absence of fumes, and operators will benefit from never having to refuel these futuristic vehicles.

Electric people-movers are ideal for theme parks and natural parks, as they can climb very steep grades and help preserve the natural environment. A decade ago, Transpower partner ISE developed an electric drive system using lead-acid battery technology that was integrated into two tram systems built by Trams International. These vehicles demonstrated the essential feasibility and tremendous promise of this application. Today's lithium battery technologies offer the opportunity to build newer generations of trams that will have greater operating range, along with lighter weight battery packs that will last substantially longer.
