TransPower To Provide Electric School Bus Solutions to Blue Bird
Escondido, California, January 27, 2017 – Transportation Power, Inc. (“TransPower”) a leading provider of clean vehicle and stationary energy storage products, announced today that it is supporting Blue Bird Corporation in development of a new electric school bus with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities. Blue Bird, a bus manufacturer located in Fort Valley, GA, announced earlier this week that it was awarded $4.4 million by the U.S. Department of Energy “to develop a zero-emissions, 100% V2G electric school bus.”
Combined with matching funding from other public and private entities in California, the total project funding will be more than $9 million and result in an eight bus demonstration fleet deployed in California by 2019. The electric propulsion system to be installed into these buses will be based on TransPower’s “ElecTruck™” battery-electric drive system and will feature improvements in powertrain efficiency, battery management, and battery charging capability, as well as new V2G capabilities that will allow the buses to put electricity back into the grid – which Blue Bird believes may help bring much-needed funds to school districts.
